Former Strictly Come Dancing pro Brendan Cole has shared his thoughts on Claudia Winkleman's rumoured replacement, believing this person is not the right fit. Claudia, 54, and Tess Daly, 57, stepped down from their hosting roles at the end of the latest series of Strictly, believing it was the right time to end their 11-year run.
Tess has presented Strictly since its inception in 2004, while Claudia began hosting the results show in 2010 before becoming a main co-host in 2014. Speculation has been rife over who will take on the prestigious role, with several names rumoured to be in the running. This includes Miranda Hart, according to The Sun. However, Brendan, who was a professional dancer on Strictly from 2004 until 2017, isn't convinced that she is the right person for the job.
Speaking to Sky Vegas, he said: "Miranda Hart wouldn't be a good Strictly host. She's wonderful at what she does, but she's a comic. Strictly doesn't need a comedic like-for-like. It needs a complete shift - something classy, beautiful, and rooted in traditional showbiz. If they're making a change, make an actual change.
"Bring in a world-class performer. Go international if needed. Get someone who can dance, act, host - someone who embodies the heart of Strictly Come Dancing."
The 49-year-old also admitted he would be open to hosting the show himself, adding: "If Strictly called asking me to return, I'd consider it. I'd love to be part of the show again in the right role - especially as the presenter. But I don't think my name is currently in the mix, so I'm not waiting by the phone."
Following Tess and Claudia's exit, BBC bosses have taken drastic measures in an attempt to freshen up the show, axing several professional dancers.
Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk and Michelle Tsiakkas have all confirmed their exits, with rumours suggesting Gorka Marquez could also be axed.
Karen, 43, the show's longest-serving female pro, said now was the right time to leave after 14 years in an emotional Instagram post.
In a statement, the BBC said: "As the longest-serving female professional dancer in the history of the show, Karen has given so much of herself and her time to the programme, and we are extremely grateful for the passion, creativity and dedication she has brought to every single performance."
