Not only did Rory McIlroy get to celebrate his second Masters triumph with his family on Sunday night, but he also raised a glass to the victory with his closest childhood friend. McIlroy has had Harry Diamond carrying his bag since 2017, and the pair have shared countless memorable moments on the golf course together.
Last year's Masters marked the first major championship they claimed together, making the achievement all the more special for the Holywood golfer. "I've known Harry since I was seven years old," McIlroy revealed, while holding back tears during his post-round press conference following the 2025 Masters victory. "I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We've had so many good times together. He's been like a big brother to me throughout my life."
"To be able to share this with him after all the close calls we've had, and all the [nonsense] he's had to take from people who don't know anything about the game. This one is just as much his as it is mine. He's a massive part of what I do, and I couldn't think of anyone better to share it with."
McIlroy was referring to the scrutiny Diamond faced during the Northern Irishman's lengthy pursuit of a fifth major title. Yet the duo have silenced their critics, combining for two Masters titles and, in doing so, making Diamond an extremely wealthy man.
Caddies typically receive 10 per cent of their player's winnings in professional golf, though McIlroy may well reward Diamond with a more generous share. McIlroy banked £3.3million ($4.5m) for claiming the first major of the year, meaning Diamond will likely pocket at least £330,000 for his contribution.
Six-time major champion McIlroy has amassed up to £90m in prize money and bonuses since Diamond became his caddie, meaning Diamond's earnings from the role are likely £9m.
Diamond was an accomplished amateur golfer in his own right, evidenced by his triumph in the 2012 West of Ireland Championship, one of Irish amateur golf's most prestigious competitions.
However, the Belfast native maintains an extremely low profile and has avoided speaking to the media while working on his best friend's bag. Diamond assumed the role permanently from JP Fitzgerald, who was on McIlroy's bag for four major victories.
McIlroy said this week: "I think as an only child... he was like the big brother I never had, you know? And I think that's what makes it so special."
