In the matter of collapse of a four-storey building in Saidulajab of Saket area of ​​South Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), taking strict action, has suspended Junior Engineer (JE) Aman Jain and Assistant Engineer (AE) Sudesh Singh Chauhan of the Building Department with immediate effect. Four people, including a woman, died in the accident, while 10 people were injured. The injured are undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The deceased have been identified as Kapil, Ravi, Alok and Parvati. There is a fear that some people may still be trapped under the debris, for whom relief and rescue operations are underway.

Accident happened during construction work

According to locals, construction work on two additional floors was underway on the building. It is alleged that this accident occurred due to overloading of the building and construction negligence. The incident occurred around 7:44 pm on Saturday evening, when a large part of the building suddenly collapsed.

Canteen and coaching center also affected

According to eyewitnesses, a part of the building fell on a nearby canteen, while the other part fell on the coaching centers operating nearby. It is being told that some of the dead people were eating food in the canteen. After the accident, there was chaos in the area and rescue teams including police, fire department and NDRF immediately reached the spot.

Serious flaws revealed in preliminary investigation

In the orders issued by the office of Deputy Commissioner, South Zone of MCD, it has been said that the preliminary investigation into the collapse of building Khasra No. 262, located at Lane No. 5, Western Road, Saidulajab, has revealed serious irregularities and lack of monitoring.

Based on the investigation, JE Aman Jain has been charged with serious negligence in the discharge of his duties, while AE Sudesh Singh Chauhan has been held to have failed to ensure effective surveillance in the area.

MCD’s strict message

The MCD administration has clarified that the accident has been taken extremely seriously. Both the officers have been suspended with immediate effect after preliminary investigation confirmed dereliction of duty and weak supervision. The corporation said that any level of negligence in departmental responsibilities will not be tolerated.
