In a thrilling opener of the Tri-Nation A Series at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Ruturaj Gaikwad's remarkable century and a strong bowling display helped India A secure an eight-run victory against Sri Lanka A on Tuesday.

Facing early challenges, India A managed to score a competitive total of 277 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Gaikwad played a pivotal role, scoring 101 runs off 114 balls, which included six fours and three sixes. After a shaky start that saw them at 16 for 2, Gaikwad steadied the innings with a captain's performance.

His innings was crucial in providing the necessary stability, while contributions from the middle and lower order bolstered the total. Captain Tilak Varma added a solid 60 runs from 97 balls, hitting two fours and a six, while Suryansh Shedge contributed a quickfire 26 runs off just 14 balls, featuring a four and two sixes. India A accelerated in the final overs to finish at 277/6.

For Sri Lanka A, Mohamed Shiraz was the standout bowler, taking 2 wickets for 67 runs, while Chamika Karunaratne, Garuka Sanketh, and Wanuja Sahan each claimed one wicket.

Sri Lanka A's Chase Falls Short

Sri Lanka A began their chase strongly, establishing a 93-run opening partnership. Avishka Fernando scored 45 runs before being dismissed, and Niroshan Dickwella added 47 runs to the total. Ayush Badoni broke the partnership by taking Dickwella's wicket, leaving the hosts at 99 for 2.

Despite a valiant effort from captain Sahan Arachchige, who scored 74 runs, and Sadeera Samarawickrama, who contributed 46 runs, Sri Lanka A struggled to maintain momentum as India A's bowlers struck at crucial moments, preventing any significant partnerships in the latter stages of the innings. Ultimately, Sri Lanka A was bowled out for 269 runs in 48.5 overs, falling just eight runs short of the target.

Bowling Performance Secures Victory

The bowling attack for India A was spearheaded by Arshad Khan, Anukul Roy, Vipraj Nigam, and Ayush Badoni, each taking two wickets and playing vital roles in limiting the opposition's scoring.

This victory marks a strong start for India A in the Tri-Nation A Series, which also includes Afghanistan A, enhancing their prospects of advancing to the final.

Gaikwad's match-winning century was instrumental in turning the tide for India A, rescuing them from a precarious position and setting the stage for a narrow yet significant win.
