Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received his first India T20I cap from Tilak Varma just before the second T20I against England at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday, July 4. The much-anticipated debut ceremony took a humorous twist when it turned out the cap was the wrong size. With the wind whipping across the ground, the teenager did his best to secure it in place, a moment that the cameras captured perfectly.
The media didn’t miss a beat, sharing the cap ceremony video across cricket social media shortly after. In the clip, Sooryavanshi was seen grappling with the undersized cap, trying to push it down firmly while the Old Trafford breeze made it a bit of a challenge. He eventually managed to get it on, but not without drawing some amused glances from those watching.

This moment was significant for more reasons than just the cap mishap. Sooryavanshi made history as India’s youngest international cricketer at just 15 years and 99 days, breaking a record that Sachin Tendulkar had held since 1989. He also became the youngest T20I debutant ever. Although he was part of the squad for the Ireland series, he didn’t get a chance to play until now, finally getting his shot at Old Trafford.
His journey to this point has been impressive, highlighted by a stellar IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he racked up 776 runs, including a century and five half-centuries, earning the Orange Cap along with four other awards.
The second T20I is where the series really kicks off. The opener at Chester-le-Street was called off due to rain interrupting India’s innings at 189 for 7, with Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer both scoring half-centuries.
At Old Trafford, Iyer won the toss and opted to bat, sending Sooryavanshi and Sharma out to open together. The English side, led by Harry Brook, welcomed back Jofra Archer and gave Josh Tongue his debut. The five-match T20I series continues at Old Trafford later this week.
