New Delhi: India’s Bindyarani Devi added another medal to the country’s Commonwealth Games campaign after winning bronze in the women’s 58kg weightlifting competition in Glasgow on Monday. The experienced lifter delivered a determined performance in a tough field to finish on the podium.

Bindyarani completed the event with a total lift of 199kg, combining an 87kg snatch and a 112kg clean and jerk. The Indian started the snatch round with 83kg before successfully improving to 85kg and then 87kg in her final attempt.

The 26-year-old entered the competition with the experience of a Commonwealth Games silver medal behind her, having finished second in the women’s 55kg category at Birmingham 2022. Competing in a new weight division, Bindyarani showed her ability to adapt and secured another Commonwealth Games medal.

Lawal dominates with record-breaking gold

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal produced a stunning performance to retain her women’s 58kg title. The World Championships silver medallist finished with a massive total of 229kg, breaking both Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records on her way to gold.

Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau claimed the silver medal after finishing with a total of 215kg, leaving Bindyarani to complete the podium with bronze.

The Indian had remained in medal contention throughout the competition. She successfully lifted 112kg in her opening clean and jerk attempt but could not complete her final attempts at 116kg, eventually settling for third place.

Bindyarani’s journey to the podium

Bindyarani was born in Imphal, Manipur and began her sporting career in taekwondo before switching to weightlifting in 2013. She quickly progressed through the ranks, winning national and international honours before earning a place in India’s senior setup.

Her breakthrough moment came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games where she won silver after setting a Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk. Despite battling knee injuries in 2023, she returned stronger and continued to improve.

In 2025, Bindyarani broke Mirabai Chanu’s national snatch record with an 88kg lift at the National Games and later secured silver at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad. Her bronze medal in Glasgow marks her second Commonwealth Games podium finish and India’s fifth medal in weightlifting at the ongoing Games.
