Tigers’ home from a hunting ground

The Ranthambore forests were once the hunting grounds of the Jaipur and Karauli royal families. Wildlife was protected within some of the royal reserves, but over time, tiger numbers began to decline due to poaching and other pressures.

Project Tiger changed the picture

Ranthambore was one of the first nine tiger reserves under Project Tiger, launched in 1973. At that time, the tiger situation was critical, but efforts at conservation, patrolling, habitat improvement, and controlling human activities gradually changed the situation.

How did the number of tigers increase?

Several reasons are believed to be behind the return of tigers to Ranthambore:

• Protected area status for forests


• Control of poaching


• Improved habitat for game species (such as sambar and chital)


• Rehabilitation of villages and reduction of human pressure


• Efforts by the Forest Department and Conservation Organizations

Due to these efforts, Ranthambore became an important centre for breeding and conservation of tigers.

Famous tigers of Ranthambore

Many of Ranthambore’s tigers have gained worldwide recognition. In particular, tigress Machli (T-16) and her offspring brought international fame to the reserve. Tourists from India and abroad come to see the tigers here.
