There’s still time to arrange a getaway staycation if you’ve yet to head off this summer. And, according to one pair of travel experts, there’s nowhere better than a “fairytale town” in the south of England.
Globe-trotting duo Theo and Rodrigo, who hail from Italy and Brazil respectively, routinely share their favourite holiday destinations from across the world. In a video, however, they spotlighted a charming East Sussex location as an absolute must-visit.
“It looks like it was frozen in time,” they gushed in a TikTok clip, drawing attention to the town centre’s Tudor architecture.
The destination? “It’s called Rye,” the pair revealed. “Picture cobbled streets, cute houses and a hilltop castle watching over it all.”
Theo and Rodrigo proceeded to identify Rye’s standout feature – Mermaid Street, a road frequently described as amongst the most beautiful in England. The pair added: “It’s lined with crooked cottages and little shops you’ll want to wander into.”
The footage also highlighted Fletcher’s House, renowned for its high-tea brunch; The Old Shed off-licence; Rye Deli; and Simply Rye for an array of local gifts as worthwhile stopping points.
“It’s the perfect place for a slow stroll or a cosy pub lunch,” they noted.
The pair also captured the delightful surroundings as they passed Rye Pottery and other landmarks. What’s more, you can even wander down to the beach if you fancy some sea air.
Supporting Theo and Rodrigo’s recommendation, Rye’s visitor guide published by Visit 1066 Country declares: “A medieval citadel huddled against invaders and the sea, Rye reveals its history gently.
“Today it’s home to a myriad of art, curiosities and cosy pubs, as well as modern boutique hotels and contemporary restaurants serving the best Sussex has to offer, from land and sea.”
The website adds: “Built on smuggled secrets and timeless tales, Rye has nooks and crannies to explore and distant views across Romney Marsh to ponder.”
And judging by the reactions to the short video, people agree it’s a wonderful place to visit if you want somewhere walkable with fairytale cottages and oodles of historic charm.
Responding to the clip, one TikTok user enthused: “What an adorable spot!” A second person offered their recommendation: “Went to the Greek pub [Marco’s] restaurant there, fabulous owners.”
A third commented: “How pretty!” And a fourth agreed: “This is so stinking cute!”
