The Maharashtra FDA has shut two IIT Bombay hostel messes for operating without mandatory food licences and suspended four Mumbai eateries after inspections found serious food safety and hygiene violations. The drive, conducted between August 4 and 6, also resulted in five stop-business notices and one improvement notice under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Mumbai, August 7, 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the closure of two IIT Bombay hostel messes for operating without mandatory food licences and issued a stop-business notice to Chathradharr Caterers at the MMRDA office in Bandra-Kurla Complex during an enforcement drive triggered by complaints.

Between August 4 and 6, the FDA inspected 10 hotels, restaurants, and canteens across Mumbai, suspending the licences of four food establishments, issuing five stop-business notices, and serving one improvement notice for violations of food safety and hygiene norms.

IIT Bombay Messes Closed

An FDA official said the inspection at IIT Bombay was initiated after the department received a complaint about hostel messes operating without the required licence. During the inspection of three hostel messes, the Hostel No. 1 and Hostel No. 3 messes were found functioning without the mandatory food licence or registration under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and were directed to immediately stop operations.
