Nagappa Family: In today's times, Nagappa family has become an example. While families are becoming smaller in modern lifestyle, a family from Andhra Pradesh is still strongly following the old tradition of joint family. There are 83 members and six generations living together in this family. Nagappa family of Kurlapalli village of Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh has today become a subject of research all over the world. The Nagappa family also has six mothers-in-law, 14 daughters-in-law and 20 children.
The family, spread across four adjacent houses, functions as a unified unit, sharing income, responsibilities and food.

Food is cooked together, household expenses are divided among themselves and responsibilities ranging from household work to farming are handled together. Elder members of the family take many important decisions collectively.

The daily activities of the family are carried out according to a disciplined schedule. The elders of the house make plans for the day every morning while drinking coffee. They divide household chores, decide the food menu and share farming and household responsibilities among themselves. Some members go to the fields, while others do the work of cooking and maintaining the house, so that the functioning of such a large family runs smoothly.

A special tradition of the family is their shared kitchen. Even though they live in different houses, food is cooked together. The elders of the house look after the purchase and sale of ration and essential items, while the daughters-in-law together cook food for the entire family.

The family income is also part of the sharing system. Apart from farming, the family also owns four buses, which ply between Kalyandurgam and some areas of Karnataka. The family jointly manages the income from farming and transportation.

It is not unusual for there to be conflict of opinions in such a large family. The elders of the family also admit that sometimes differences arise between the members, but they try not to keep the resentment for too long. Before the end of the day, family members sit together and talk and try to resolve mutual disputes.

Mahesh, a fourth generation member of the Nagappa family, now has many important responsibilities for the entire family. According to him, the tradition of living together in the family has been going on since the time of Nagappa and now it has reached six generations. The elders have largely handed over the responsibility of external work to Mahesh.
