Jawai Dam, built amidst the rocky hills of Aravali in Pali district of Rajasthan, is not just a big reservoir of water. Jawai Dam is built on Jawai River, which further becomes a tributary of Luni River. The dam is located around Sumerpur and is important for western Rajasthan in terms of irrigation and water supply. According to a Rajasthan government source, the construction of Jawai Dam started in 1946 during the time of Maharaja Umed Singh and was completed in 1956.

There are two areas of Jawai Bandh Panther Conservation Reserve registered in the records of Rajasthan Forest Department. The 2024 wildlife census recorded 15 leopards in Jawai Dam Panther Conservation Reserve-I and 19 leopards in Reserve-II.

Unique coexistence of humans and leopards

The specialty of Jawai is not just the presence of leopards. Here, local rural communities and wildlife have been living in the same natural area for a long time. The traditional cattle rearing culture of the Rabari community can also be seen around Jawai.
