Hyderabad: Construction of an alleged “unauthorised and illegal” temple on Shia waqf land in Secunderabad triggered tensions in the Tirumalagiri locality following Friday prayers on November 6.
Syed Nisar Hussain, president of the protected waqf property Kohe Imam-e-Zamin, filed a complaint at the Tirumalagiri Police Station on Saturday, November 7, calling for the immediate removal of the structure.
During a field inspection, the Kohe Imam-e-Zamin members noticed that a temple was being erected on the land, the complaint read.
“The land has been registered under the Shia Waqf Board since 1951 and is protected under the provisions of the Waqf Act,” Hussain told Siasat.com.
“By the time we came back from Friday namaz, we saw that they had erected some structure for the temple,” he said.
He said after a call with All India Majlid-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, local party leaders helped him initiate action against the unauthorised structure. Subsequently, a first information report (FIR) was registered under Sections 324 (2) (mischief) and 329(3) (criminal trespass) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Videos and images shared by Hussain show an idol placed on the land.
Majlis Bachao Tahreek spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan visited the site and demanded that the police intervene and verify the legality of the construction.
When asked if the complaint names an accused individual or group, Hussain clarified their only demand was for the structure to be cleared and that no individual was named in the FIR.
However, when asked whether the individuals knew it was waqf land, he responded, “How could they not know? It has been a registered, confirmed waqf property for years.”
He also said that there had been no previous incident like this, adding that the police had cleared the structure on Sunday morning.
The situation remains peaceful at the moment, Hussain said.
