In a significant step towards digital governance, the Indian government is preparing to launch a Unified Digital Identity System that will allow citizens to easily update their personal details—such as name, address, and mobile number—across key identity documents like Aadhaar, PAN card, Driving License, Passport, and Voter ID from a single online portal.

This upcoming centralized portal aims to eliminate the hassle of visiting multiple government offices for updating personal information. Instead, users will be able to log in to the platform, choose the type of update (such as address or phone number), upload the required documents, and submit their request. Once verified, changes will be automatically reflected across all linked identity documents—typically within three working days.

Additionally, if users require a reissued identity card with the updated information, the portal will offer an option to order a new document by paying a nominal fee. The updated card will then be delivered by post within seven working days, making the process completely digital and user-friendly.

Currently, the system is undergoing trial runs and has already achieved 92% accuracy. Once it reaches a benchmark of 98% or higher, it will be officially rolled out for public use. Officials say this move will significantly reduce paperwork, save time, and make the identity update process more efficient and transparent.

The Unified Digital Identity System is part of the government’s broader mission to integrate digital services and provide citizens with a single-window solution for identity management. Once launched, this initiative is expected to bring transformative changes by offering a streamlined, hassle-free, and secure method of updating key documents—enhancing convenience and minimizing bureaucratic delays.

This development will be particularly beneficial for individuals who frequently change residences or need to update multiple IDs due to marriage, legal name changes, or other personal reasons.

With the launch of this one-stop digital solution, updating identity documents will no longer be a complex or time-consuming task. The government’s move reflects its commitment to leveraging technology for simpler, smarter, and citizen-centric governance.
