In a test of various washing-up liquids available in UK supermarkets, the best was named, and it wasn't Fairy Liquid. Washing-up liquid is a staple in UK homes, and many households go through a whole bottle in just a matter of weeks or even days. But what makes a good washing-up liquid? Of course, it's how well it cleans dirty dishes. It's frustrating when you feel like you have been endlessly scrubbing and there are still marks on your dishes and cookware.

This can happen when you're using a sub-par bottle of washing-up liquid. Although some are incredibly cheap, you may end up using more of it to get your dishes sparkling, meaning you end up spending even more money as you go through washing-up liquid faster. That's why a group of cleaning experts put various bottles of washing up liquid to the test to determine which is the very best. The test was conducted at the Good Housekeeping test lab, and various factors were assessed, including grease-cutting power, skin-friendliness, foam levels and how well they rinsed off.

The product that came out on top was Ecover Camomile & Clementine Washing Up Liquid, which costs £2.50 through Ocado. The only con the experts identified is that it's not produced in the UK.

However, its pros include lasting suds that excel at cutting grease, a range of lovely scents, the fact that it's plant-based and biodegradable, and it comes in a recycled bottle.

"This liquid was our best for grease busting, cleaning nearly every lard-smeared plate in the test with minimal scrubbing," Good Housekeeping said. "Glassware and mugs were easily tackled too, but it did need a little more elbow grease for protein-based stains like egg and spinach, especially on forks and bowls. Still, everything came clean in the end."

Additionally, a panel found that the subtle smell was nice, and that the bottle was easy-to-use.
