Relevance of Panguni Uthiram 2025
The Skanda Purana mentions eight maha vratas, including the Kalyanam Vrata. When the Sun is in the Meena Rashi (Pisces sign) on the Utthara Nakshatram during the Shukla Paksha in the Tamil month of Phalguni, this fortunate vrata is performed. Since it honours the union of Devaseenaa with Lord Muruga and the marriage of Goddess Parvati to Lord Shiva, the day of Kalyana Vrata is regarded as very fortunate.
It is said that following the Kalyana Vrata would bring wealth, happiness, and good health as well as other heavenly benefits from Lord Shiva. The devotee receives freedom and arrives in Kailasa Dham, the home of Lord Shiva. While young ladies maintain the fast to ensure a loving and moral spouse, young males follow this vrata to locate their ideal mate. Good offspring are blessed to couples who conduct this holy vratham. Hindu gods and goddesses, such as Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Indra, all obtained suitable life mates after finishing the Kalyana Vrata, demonstrating the vrata’s splendour.
Rituals at Panguni Uthiram 2025
Devotees get up early and meditate on Lord Shiva in his bridal pose with Goddess Parvati in order to observe the Kalyanam Vrata on Panguni Uthiram. They bathe, wash their garments, and worship the gods after meditation. An idol of the heavenly pair is made of metal, ideally gold if it is within budget, and is worshipped alongside holy objects. After then, the idols are exquisitely embellished with flowers and jewels in anticipation of the formal marriage.
A special feast is prepared to celebrate Lord Shiva and his spouse, and sweet gifts are offered as an homage to the celestial pair. Prasad is given to everyone, and the feast is shared with other devotees and their partners. After then, the Kalyanam Vrata spectator goes to a neighbouring Shiva temple to ask for the blessings of the Lord. They show their respect by bowing down and walking around the lord three times.
Devotees break their fast with prasad, which is delicious Payasam and fruits, after keeping a rigorous fast all day. On this day, just one meal is eaten. The observer sleeps on dharbari grass as part of the ceremony. To conclude the Kalayanam Vrata, the observer gives the golden statue of Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma to another devout follower of Lord Shiva the next day after finishing the morning duties.
The southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh commemorate this important day as the festival of Panguni Uttiram. At Lord Murugan temples, devotees congregate in enormous numbers to witness the enthusiastic reenactment of the divine marriage of the gods and goddesses. This festival is observed austerely by prominent temples in Madurai, Vedaranyam, Tiruvarur, Tinnevelly, Perur, and Kanjeevaram.
